Second Half Game Summaries

Week 4

Saturday, May 17 - Dodgers 7, Cardinals 3
Saturday, May 17 - Pirates 1, Giants 0
   In an incredibly well-played 6 inning nail biter, the Pirates edged the Giants 1-0.  Kevin Brown threw for the visiting Giants while Jordan Sechler threw for the home Pirates in a rematch of their first meeting. Once again both pitchers went the distance for their respective clubs. This time around Kevin Brown threw a 5 hitter while walking none and striking out 9. Jordan Sechler threw a no-hitter (his second of the year), walking 3 and striking out 9.  Sechler pitched out of a bases loaded pinch in the top of the 3rd for the Pirates while Brown stranded a leadoff double by Taylor Mowatt in the bottom half of the 4th, striking out 3 consecutive batters.
   The only run of the game was scored in the bottom half of the 6th inning when Catcher Chris (Stix) Llanera lead off with a double. 2B Bret Walberg had an infield hit to place runners at first and third. SS Ethan Ventura had the game winning RBI with a single down the left field line after getting in a hole 0-2.
   Both teams played spectacular defense with fine catches in the outfield by Nick Stellar for the Giants and Ryan McGready for the Pirates.

Thursday, May 15 - Pirates 12, Cubs 2
    The Pirates swept the series against the Cubs with a final score of 12 - 2 in favor of the Pirates.  In a game shortened by the 10 run rule, Pirate pitching struck out 8 of the batters faced in just 4 innings of play while giving up just 3 bases on balls.
    For the Cubs, Pitcher Erice "Wolfie" spies had an excellent day at the plate with an in the park home run in his first trip and a triple in his second trip to the plate! Jeff Smith pitched in with a single for the only other hit of the game for the Cubs.
    Pirate bats were were hot on the night. Second baeman Bret (BMW) Walberg was on fire going 4-4 with two doubles. Several other Pirates had a multiple hit night as well; Leadoff man and catcher Chris (Stix) Llanera was 2-4 at the plate. Shortstop Ethan Ventura was 2-3 with a walk, 1B Jordan Sechler was 2-3 with 2 doubles, 3B Nick (Crash) Garcia was 2-3 with a triple, P/1B Taylor (Mo) Mowatt was 2-3, CF Jake Thompson was 2-2 with a double.  In all the Pirates sent 30 batters to the plate in the 4 innings compiling 17 hits, with 6 extra base hits and only 3 bases on balls.  Contribution by Cubs Team Information Officer.
    A terrible loss for the Cubs after a great win Monday.  A few bright spots for the Cubs: Eric "Wolfie" Spies went 2 for 2 at the plate with an inside-the-park homerun and a double, and Devin Greene made his Major League pitching debut giving up 5 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3.  Good Job Devin. The Cubs had a Big Win! The team  played great. Jeff Smith pitched the entire game giving up 1 hit, 7 BB's,  and striking out 4. Jeff did a great job! Eric "Wolfie" Spies had two great  catches in center in the 2nd and 4th innings to stop the Giants. Luke Reccord  went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, Eric "Wolfie" Spies was 1 for 2 with a triple and  2 RBI's, and Jeff Smith helped his cause going 1 for 2 also. Way to go Cubs!


Week 3

Saturday, May 10 – Pirates 10, Phillies 4
The Pirates amassed 10 runs on 10 hits with 5 Base on Balls and 2 hit batsmen to beat the Phillies in the final game of the season between the two teams.  The Phillies managed 4 runs on 7 hits with 7 base on balls.  Pirates pitching struck out 10 batters to close the game out after 51/2 innings. Phillies pitching had 5 K's.
For the Pirates, leadoff man Chris (Stix) Llanera was 3-3 at the plate and was hit by a pitch for a perfect on base %, with 3 runs scored.  Shortstop Ethan Ventura was perfect at the plate with 2 hits and 2 base on balls while scoring 1 run. Cleanup hitter Jordan Sechler was 2-2 at the plate with a sacrifice fly and hit by pitch, driving in 3 runs. Pirate defense kept the team in the game with second baseman Bret Walberg making a fine play behind second on a hard hit ball by Philly Quentin Sims.
For the Phillies, Seth Rodenberger was 2-4 at the plate with 2 runs scored. Jacob Cooper had a long single off the centerfield fence and a base on balls. Shortstop/Pitcher Quentin Sims continued to hit Pirate pitching hard while going 2-3 at the plate, hitting the ball hard every time up. Catcher Troy Ambroff pitched in with 2 singles, one in the 3rd and one in the 5th.

Thursday, May 8 – Dodgers 12, Giants 2
On a windswept Thursday afternoon, the Giants tasted defeat for the first time in the second half at the hands of the Dodgers. The Dodgers continue to be a force to be reckoned with. The undermanned Giants gave it all they had. Devon Donovan had a strong day on the basepaths receiving 2 walks, stealing 2 bases, scoring a run and made his pitching debut. Jason Lew also made his first appearance as a pitcher and got a huge strikeout with an astonishing curveball for a called strike three. Austin Sedin and Cole Pinson each had RBI's. The redoubtable Giants built some character today. They'll be back.
Wednesday, May 7 – Phillies 4, Cubs 2
Tuesday, May 6 – Pirates 11, Cardinals 5
In a game where errors hurt both teams, the Pirates outlasted the Cardinals for the win in the final game of the season between the two teams. The Pirates won the series 2 games to 1.  The Pirates offense was lead by the second baseman from the 2 hole, Bret Walberg. BMW was 3-4 at the plate with 2 runs scored. Shortstop Ethan Ventura was 2-4 at the plate driving in 3 runs in the process.  Third baseman Nick Garcia provided offense out of the 5 spot with an outstanding day at the plate going 3-4 with 2 singles and a double, driving in 3 runs. Taylor Mowatt contributed with 2 hits in 3 apperances with a base on balls. JT Prober was 3-4 at the plate in a breakout game for the rookie utility player. The Cardinal offense was lead by Kyle and Codie Chenault, each going 2-3 at the plate with a base on balls each.  Dale Gillaspy, Marl Probst, Nico Guzman and Ian Lane all pitched in with singles. Pirate pitching struck out 7 batters, giving up 8 base on balls and allowing just 8 hits. Cardinals pitching struck out 6, while giving up only 3 base on balls while allowing 15 hits

The Cubs struggled getting the bat on the ball when they needed to, stranding 6 runners throughout the game. Brad Gusman went 1 for 2 with a great single to start off the 3rd inning. Jeff Smith also went 1 for 2 on the day.
The Pirates has 6 runs on 5 hits while the Cubs struggled to throw strikes. Cub pitching walked 10 batters giving the Pirates plenty of
base-runners. Pirates Catcher/leadoff hitter Chris Llanera was perfect at the plate with 3 base on balls and a single with 2 runs scored to start the Pirate offense. Jordan Sechler had a hard double in the 4th inning to drive in 2 runs. Cub offense struggled as Pirate pitching dominating, striking out 10 batters while giving up just 1 base on balls!
Tuesday, April 29 – Giants 11, Phillies 1
The orange-clad Giants continued to roll with an 11-1 win over the daunting Phillies on Tuesday afternoon. Cutting down two streaking Phillies runners at the plate and another at third, the Giants defense finally kicked in along with some good pitching and opportune hitting throughout the lineup. Kevin Brown had a breakout game at the plate with 3 hits, a walk and 5 RBI. Mitch Gleason shined with 2 hits, 3 runs scored and 3 stolen bases. Pesky Nick Steller was aboard the bases all night with a dazzling bunt single and 2 walks. Pitchers Ryan Anglin and Kevin Brown combined for 6 strikeouts and allowed only 1 walk. Great game, Orange Sox!!

Well played game! The Cubs defense kept us in the game with two great catches from Wolfie Spies at short in the first and a great catch in center field from Devan Greene to start the second inning before the Cardinals bats came alive. The Cubs pitchers gave up 8 hits, no BB's and had 5 K's for the day. Luke Reccord went 1 for 3 and Brian Brickey was 1 for3 with two RBI's.   Contribution by Team Information Officer.

Under threatening skies, the Giants met the improving and dangerous Cubs Thursday night. Behind the stellar pitching of Kevin Brown, the Giants emerged with the win, 10-0. Kevin struck out 9 and did not walk a batter in his complete game shutout. The Giants corps of veteran hitters emerged with a vengeance, getting several key hits. Austin Sedin had the biggest day at the plate with 2 hits and 4 RBI. Devon Donovan had two hits and scored twice. Danny White also had two hits and 2 RBI. Monday, April 21 – Giants 8, Cardinals 4
Sporting new orange socks and belts plus a new attitude, Manager Dennis Brown’s Giants opened the second half with an 8-4 victory over the Cardinals.  A scoreless game through two innings, the Giants broke the game open with six runs in the third inning.  The big blast in the inning was a grand slam by Evan Ferini.  It was Evan’s second home run of the year.  The Cardinals’ bats came alive in the sixth, but not enough to deny Giants pitcher Ryan Anglin a complete game victory.  The new-look giants have served notice that they have come to play in the second half.    Contribution by Team Information Officer.

 First Half Team Summaries
 
Reds win the first half with an April 12 6-0 victory over the Dodgers.  It all came down to the last game of the first half to determine the Major’s first half champion.  In the Winner-Take-All battle, the Reds beat the Dodgers to put the two teams in a tie with identical 6 win and 2 loss records.  This was the two teams only meeting of the first half, and the tie-breaker is the head-to-head game.  The Reds win the tie-breaker to claim the first half.

The Cubs had a great first half!  Although the win/loss record seems to say they struggled, this is what it looked like. The Cubs had a tough schedule playing the top two teams twice in the first half. The Cubs took both of these teams to extra innings before being beat, two games were lost by one run, and  two games were lost by two runs. The Cubs outfielders had some great catches to stop their opponents and the Cubs bats were coming around, including one player in the homerun club! The Cubs are looking forward to the second half! After playing two innings to complete our game on 4/1 the Cubs and the Reds had another great game! The Cubs pitching duo of Jimmy Newell and Eric “Wolfie” Spies, faced 26 batters giving up 4 hits, 3 BB's and striking out 10. Brian Brickey went 2 for 3 and Jason Gibbs was 1 for 3 at the plate. Nick Kaylor had a great catch in center in the first inning to stop the Reds. Kody Jones also made two great catches in center to stop the Reds in the 3rd inning.
Thursday, April 10 – Reds 7, Cubs 6
The Cubs and the Reds finished the game from 4/1 where they were tied at 6 after 5 innings and the game was called due to darkness. The teams went into an extra inning before the Reds scored to break the tie. Great Game!

Game will be continued on Thursday, April 10 at 4:30 immediately preceding the next meeting for these two teams.  Game called after 5 innings due to darkness. The Cubs put together some hits in the 5th to tie the game.  Jeff Smith faced 26 batters, and had 10 K's, 4 BB's and gave up 4 hits. Kody Jones single in the 5th brought in the tying run. Cubs had 6 hits and scored 6 runs. Good Job!

Dodger lefty Mike "MC" Covington was sharp from the mound after spending last week at outdoor camp. "MC" also did well from the batters box with his 2nd Home Run of the season. The heart of the Dodger lineup was pretty tough on the Giants pitching. Tyler "Squeak" Ward was 3 for 3 with 1 rbi and 2 runs scored. Elliott "Moose" Musumeci lines triple to left center driving in a run. Chris "Framer" Coates singles home "Moose"  with his 2nd base hit of the day. Great Job Dodger Blue!
Saturday, March 29 – Cubs 11, Cardinals 9
The Cubs have their first win! The Cub bats were alive starting with Brian Brickey's home run over the center field fence in the 1st inning with one RBI. Jeff Smith was 2 for 2 with 1 RBI, Jimmy Newell was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI's and Luke Reccord was 2 for 3. Jason Gibbs had a diving catch in right field to end the game and secure the win. Great Job Cubs!

Cardinal pitching  puts halt to Dodger offense. Dodger leadoff hitter Sean "Sonic" Kothe gets on base 3 times with a walk and 2 doubles crossing the dish only 1 time. Dodger rookie centerfielder Jarrett "Bond" McPike hits double for his first big league hit. Isaac Gifford another Dodger rookie gets his first big league hit as well.

Saturday, March 22 – Dodgers 6, Pirates 1
Pirates give Dodgers offensive fits in first 4 innings. With something about to happen with Dodger bats in 3rd inning, Pirate shortstop Ethan Ventura turns beautiful 6-4-3 double play cooling those Dodger bats. Those bats did not stay cool for long. The Dodgers bottom of the 5th brings 5 runs on Tyler "Squeaky" Wards leadoff double, Sean "Sonic" Kothe's hot line drive to left for a run scoring triple bringing in rookie Joseph Delacruz.  Elliot "Moose" Musumeci singles in a run. One pitch later, Chris "Framer" Coates hits a blast over the left center fence. The Cubs pitching duo of Jimmy Newell and Eric "Wolfie" Spies faced 31 batters, struck out 10, gave up 10 hits and walked 4. Jimmy Newell also turned a beautiful U-6-6-4 double play
in the 6th to finish the inning. Luke Reccord went 2 for 3 and Eric "Wolfie" Spies went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's.
Saturday, March 22 – Reds 11, Giants 0
Saturday, March 22 – Phillies 8, Cubs 6
Cubs put together 5 hits and scored 6 runs in a late comeback effort.  The pitching duo for the Cubs faced 25 batters and had 5 K’s and 4 BB’s.  5 players had hits, some of them their first in the Major League.  Congratulations!
Thursday, March 20 – Giants 7, Cardinals 5
Wednesday, March 19 – Dodgers 6, Phillies 5
Dodgers score 4 runs in bottom of 6th to overcome Phillies' 3 go ahead runs in the top of the 5th. The Dodgers Elliott "Moose" Musumeci leads the way to great comeback with lead off double. With 1 out and 2 strikes on the count, Mike Covington "blasts " HR over the right centerfield fence to cut the Phillies lead to 1.  With 2 outs, rookie Colton Kragie gets a single.  With 2 strikes on him, rookie Ryan Sheppard hits an inside the park HR down the right field line!
Tuesday, March 18 – Pirates 5, Cubs 2
Game called due to darkness after 5 innings.  Pirates compiled 5 runs on 7 hits with no errors.   Pirate pitching gave up 3 hits with only 1 base on balls while striking out 13 of the 17 batters faced.  Jordan Sechler struck out 8 of the 14 batters faced with 2 BB.   Taylor Mowatt struck out 5 of the 7 batters faced while hitting 1 batter.  Offensively Bret Walberg was 2 for 3 at the plate with 2 runs scored.   Ethan Ventura was 3 for 3 at the plate with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.
For the Cubs, Jimmy Newell faced 12 batters, and had 6 strikeouts, 2 base on balls, and gave up 2 hits.  Brian Brickey was 1 for 2 with a ground rule double that bounced over the fence and had 2 RBI’s.  Jeff Smith had the other hit for the Cubs.  Great start for the expansion team!
